Within two weeks of President Donald Trump taking office for his second term, his campaign promise to carry out mass deportations seems to be going into effect, as reports spread of officers with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) descending into communities across the country. ICE reportedly arrested members of Atlanta’s undocumented community in Chamblee, Brookhaven and other parts of the city on Jan. 26 and 27.
Atlanta residents responded to the ICE raids by holding rallies in defense of immigrants’ rights Jan. 29 on Jesse Jewell Parkway in Gainesville, and on Feb. 1 at Plaza Fiesta on Buford Highway. The Buford Highway rally was organized by the Party for Socialism and Liberation, the Campaign to Shut Down Folkston ICE Processing Center, ICE Breakers, and the Rainbow Collective.
